Interior architect in Monaco: who does what?
Architect, interior architect, interior decorator, renovation company: four professions that are often confused, and which do not carry the same responsibilities. This guide will help you decide whom to approach.
The answer in a few lines
In Monaco, architecture is a regulated profession: any project affecting the structure or the external appearance of a building falls to an architect. Interior architects and interior decorators design the layout and the atmosphere of an interior. A renovation company carries out the work. Ars Dekor is not an architectural practice: we design interior layouts and decoration, and we carry them out.
Four professions, four roles
| Profession | What they do | When you need them |
|---|---|---|
| Architect | Designs construction and conversion projects, prepares planning applications and may oversee the works. A regulated profession in Monaco. | Work affecting the structure, the façades or the use of the property. |
| Interior architect | Designs the interior layout: room plan, drawings, materials, lighting. Does not carry out the work themselves. | Reorganising an interior without touching the structure. |
| Interior decorator | Creates the atmosphere: colours, fabrics, furniture, objects. | An interior to furnish or refresh. |
| Renovation company | Carries out the work, coordinates the trades and hands over the finished property. | Whenever there is building work. |
| Ars Dekor | Designs interior layouts and decoration, and carries them out with its own teams. Does not practise as an architect. | Renovation or interior design, with a single point of contact. |

Your questions, our answers
Do you need an architect to renovate an apartment in Monaco?
It depends on the work. As long as the structure, the façades and the common parts are left untouched, an interior renovation is generally a matter for a renovation company, within the building’s regulations. Beyond that, an architect is required. We will tell you at the first visit.
Who is responsible for the work if I use an interior architect?
The company that carries out the work is responsible for it. When the same firm designs and builds, as Ars Dekor does, a single point of contact answers for everything.
Can Ars Dekor design my interior?
Yes. We design the layout, choose the materials with you and carry out the work. Our approach to interior design
