Start with the way you live
Before colours and door fronts, the right questions are about use: do you cook every day or only at weekends? Do you entertain often? Is the kitchen open to the living room, or does it need to be closed off? How many people work in it at the same time?
The answers determine everything else: the length of worktop, the position of the island, the power of the extraction, the amount of storage. A kitchen that looks beautiful but is poorly thought out shows it every day.
Design it with the services
A kitchen depends on its water supply, waste, electrics and extraction. If it is designed as an afterthought, it has to bend to the existing services. If it is designed with the apartment, the services work for it: the sink goes where it should, the extractor vents where the building allows, the sockets fall in the right place.

Worktops, fronts and appliances
Stone worktops, whether marble, onyx or natural stone, are chosen from the actual slab, for its veining and its colour. They are cut to measure, with an integrated sink if you wish. Door fronts, lacquered or in wood, are likewise chosen from samples, in the light of the room itself.
Integrated appliances are decided at the drawing stage: their dimensions and connections determine the carcasses. So is the lighting, under the wall units, in the niches and above the island.
In a Monaco apartment building
A kitchen connects to the building’s water risers and sometimes to its ducts. The building’s regulations set working hours, access to common areas and delivery conditions, which matter when large stone worktops are involved. The managing agent must be informed, and the company prepares the paperwork.
Choosing the right professional
